ToastMasters CC Project 5 Speech - My Swimming Lessons - 2nd July 2011

It was the year 1990 and I was enjoying my summer vacation. I wanted to learn Swimming. When I asked my father’s permission, the response was a strict “No”.

Good Evening Mr. Toastmaster, Fellow Toastmasters and Distinguished Guests.

I was adamant about learning swimming and went on a “Fast” like Anna Hazare. I did not eat all day.  Finally, my father agreed, with a condition that I should go with friends and not alone.

Chintu, Munna and I went to K.C.Reddy Swimming Pool in Sadashivanagar. I saw a big Swimming Pool and the water was Sky Blue in colour.  There was Lush green Garden on to the right side of the Pool.

Water splashed as soon as I jumped into the pool. It was thrilling & I enjoyed it. Chintu had brought small plastic ball.  We started playing with it by throwing it on the water.

In the first week of swimming, there was less of swimming and more of playing. Then I became serious about learning to swim. However, there wasn’t anybody to teach me.

An idea struck me! I bought a book “Learn Swimming in 30 Days”. I read the book within a day and I was all set to go Swimming!

Next day, I went to the Swimming Pool with the Book.  The book said “Beat your legs by holding onto the edge”. I entered the water and beat my legs. I was very happy with my leg beating skills.

I got out of the water, picked up the book again and read “Move your hands to push the water behind you”. I got back into the water and moved my hands as I stood in the pool.

I became happier with my progress and thought “Ah this is it!” I did this over the next two days and my confidence increased.

On the third day, I decided to do the hand and leg movements together! When my hands went inside, my legs wouldn’t kick the water.  When my legs started kicking, I forgot to breathe. When I started breathing, I just stood in the pool.

This went on for 30 days! The book had worn out but swimming still seemed impossible.  Finally, I was able to beat my hands and legs together and thought I was a swimming pro.

I asked my friend, Ashwath, to come with me so that I could show off my swimming skills.  Both of us went to the pool.  I proudly showed him, my Swimming Skills.  Ashwath said, ‘Bhashkar what are u doing at 4 feet, come and swim near 6 feet’.  I panicked, but I could not tell him. I had already blown my own trumpet.

I Prayed to all my Gods and swam towards middle of the pool.  By the time I reached 6 feet depth, I was already exhausted and started drowning.  Ashwath gave his hand and tried to pull me up.  But he was short and thin. Instead I started pulling him down and both of us started drowning.

All of a sudden, a Tube was thrown by somebody and I caught hold of it. Luckily both of us survived.  An Old Lady Coach had thrown the tube when she saw us drowning.  Seeing her save my life, she appeared like a Goddess to my chlorine filled eyes.

When we reached the edge of the pool, I felt a long blunt object hit my head.  It was painful.  When I looked around, the same old lady was hitting my head with a stick and shouted at me “Why did u go there, if you don’t know to swim. Suddenly she changed from being a Goddess to being a Demon.

This incident changed my perception about Learning New Things and the Risks of a False Pride.

Dear Toastmasters, I learnt a lesson the hard way that instead of trying to learn everything on our own, it is better to get Professional Training from an Expert of that field.

Now, I am learning my swimming lessons from a Swimming Coach and can perform Freestyle and Backstrokes easily. Now I am enjoying it.

If only self help books could be the solution to all learning, teachers wouldn’t be needed, schools would run empty and publishers would be laughing all the way to the bank.

I conclude with a quote from Willa Cather.  “There are some things we learn best in Calm and some in Storm”.

ToastMasters CC Project 4 Speech - My Stress Buster - 21st May 2011

How many of you want to live a Stress free Life ?

This shows most of us like to lead a Happy, Harmonious and Hassle free life.
Good Evening Mr.Toast Master, Fellow Toast Masters and Distinguished Guests.
My desire is to lead a Stress free Life for 100 years.
I approached a Doctor.  The Doctor asked me “What is the Problem?”  I told him that I wanted to know the Secret to Live a 100 years.  He was stunned.
Mr. Do you know, where are you Living?  You are in Bangalore….Do not keep such Long Term Goals.
I pleaded him to help Me and assured him of his Fees. He advised the following 3 secrets:
1) Eat Fruits and Vegetables. 2) Exercise Regularly. 3) Enjoy your Life.
I started eating raw Vegetables like Carrot, Beetroot and Tomotos.  I was feeling Energetic.
I started Walking Daily for One hour.  Initially, it was Good. After a few days, it was monsoon and gave up on the second secret.
As far as third secret was concerned,  I wanted to follow what the Doctor said. “Enjoy your Life”
It was 2nd April 2011.  I decided to enjoy that Day Completely. It was a Memorable Day in my Life.
That was the day when India beat Srilanka in World Cup Finals and made History. Pride was swelling inside of me.
In fact, that day I was in Kannur in Kerala.  We were 8 friends staying at a Beach Resort called Palm Shore Resort.
The place was fabulous. Our resort faced the Muzhapilangad Beach. The distance between the pristine Beach and the serene Resort was a mere 500 metres.
Later that night, we headed to the beach. There was complete darkness. Deadly silence all over the place. A Low, Subtle and Melodious Voice came from one side. We searched for it. Could not find anybody. Kiran said “dude, today is Amavasya Day, it may be a Ghost”
We sat on the Sea Shore. Crispy, Tasty and Red Hot Gobi Manchuri and Mushroom Manchuri were in front of us.  Within a minute, the plates went empty.
The Hot Kulchas and Rotis invited us. Paneer Butter Masala and Cashew Nut Masala fought with each other for Importance. The Butter Naan and Paneer entered my Indoor Stadium.   It just scored Fours and Sixers.
The food was hot and melted in my Mouth.  The wind was Cold and soothing to the Body and the Mind.
Next Morning, a roaring sound awakened me! I looked at the window. The silent and melodious waves had become furious in the morning.  The waves were Milky White in Color and were coming to the sea shore like Lions.
It was about 6 in the morning as the sun was playing hide and seek with the grey clouds.  The muddy sand became Smoother and Smoother as I entered the Beach.  The Milky waves came silently and touched my feet. I felt Blessed.
I found White sea shells all over the beach.  Five Star fishes were making hectic efforts to go back to the sea.  Sand particles appeared Golden Color when the Sun rays fell on them. Opposite the beach, Coconut Trees stood in a Queue and welcomed the Sun.
I went for a walk on the Beach. On to my left side was the Milky sea and  On to my right side was the Raising sun. Above my head – a Clear White sky and below my feet – a Wet and Smoother Sand.
A song of Dr.Rajkumar ringed from my Mobile - “Oh Yentha Soundarya Kande, Oho Oho Yentha Soundarya Kande’.
That was Magical, Musical and Memorable Experience for me.  Though I just spent 3 days there, I left my heart and soul in Kannur.
Dear Toastmasters, Whether I will live for 100 years or not, but I enjoyed every bit of the time I spent at Muzhapilangad Beach.  Now, Whenever I’m stressed, I just close my eyes and think of this wonderful Experience.
I found that one of the best Stress busters is to visit New Places and enjoy New Experiences.
I conclude by quoting St.Augustine: “The world is a Book and those who do not Travel read only one Page.”

Back to you Mr.Toast Master.

Toast Masters - CC Project 3 Speech – Title: Our Beliefs - Our Lives - 9th April 2011

William James said “We achieve only when we believe in our Thoughts, Abilities and Actions. Beliefs are the key to unlock our Lives”.

I say “Negative Beliefs are the key to lock our lives forever!”
Good Evening Madam Toast Master, Fellow Toastmasters and Distinguished Guests;

It was 1980- The year when I was studying 3rd Standard.  My School was in a small locality called Ammapet in Salem District of Tamil Nadu.

Being the eldest son, my parents wanted me to DO WELL in my Studies.  To fulfill my parent’s dreams, I studied hard and secured I Rank in 2nd Standard.   To my surprise, my father presented me my favourite sweet – Burfy.

When the School Vacation got over after Two Months in June 1980, I was very eager to go to School and study hard to get I Rank and my dream was to get a Box full of Burfies.

On the third day of the school reopening, the Maths Teacher came and took our Class.  I was feeling very sad.  I saw a New Maths Teacher in the place of my favourite teacher - Sharada Madam.   At the end of the year, when the results came, my Rank was reduced to 10th, due to a low score in Mathematics.

It was a hot day in June 1990. I joined SJRC College for Graduation. On the first day, I went to the college early and had sat at the Front Desk.

Slowly, new students entered the class room.  A short, thin, dark skinned person sat beside me. I introduced myself and asked his name.  He did not open up. With lot of hesitation he mentioned his name as Raju.

He was very shy and reserved.  He would rarely speak and avoided people and crowded places.   His attitude remained the same, throughout those 3 years.

Mamatha and Sunitha were best friends. They knew each other for more than ten years as they were colleagues.  Another colleague - Nalini got married and after marriage she stayed in the same locality as Sunitha.

Being from the same locality, Nalini and Sunitha came to office in the same cab.   After three months, Mamatha stopped talking Sunitha due to some issues with Nalini. Their friendship of Ten years broke!

Dear Toastmasters, such instances happen in our Day today Lives. Why is it so important?

Because it creates a BELIEF SYSTEM in us about our Attitude, Skills and Relationships.  It might happen directly or indirectly.

In my case, my affection towards my Teacher made me like Mathematics.  When another teacher came, in her place, it influenced me negatively and my liking towards Maths also got hampered.

In the case of Raju, it so happened that one day his uncle came home and spoke to him. Raju did not open up. His uncle said “Raju why are you so Shy and Reserved ? Subsequently, in his School, Teacher asked Raju to answer a question. He did not open up. Teacher said ‘Raju why are so shy and reserved?

These instances indirectly created a BELIEF in Raju that ‘He is Shy and Reserved’ so much so that he is still unable to overcome his reserved nature.

In the friendship of Mamatha and Sunitha. Sunitha got close to Nalini. Nalini was jealous about sunitha’s friendship with Mamatha.  She made false allegations on Mamatha. Sunitha believed Nalini.  One day their friendship broke due to false beliefs created by Nalini about Mamatha.

Dear Toastmasters, now we know how Negative Beliefs impacts our Lives.  Negative Believes may be created by us due to Circumstances or by somebody consciously to discourage our Spirit.

It is important to identify our Negative Beliefs in respect of our Personality, Relationships and Skills and take action to overcome them.

It is possible with imbibing Positive Thoughts, Feelings and Action. Positive Beliefs creates Mellifluous Life and we deserve it.

Dear Toastmasters, all of us are already on the path of Positivity.  Can u guess that?
We have taken a step to Overcome our Negative Beliefs.. Our Negative belief about our “Speaking and Communication Skills”.  That is why, we are here at Toastmasters.

I conclude with a quote of Tony Robbins:

Beliefs have the Power to Create and the Power to Destroy. Human beings have the awesome ability to take any Experience of their lives and create a Meaning.

Back to you Madam Toast Master.

2)  Memory, Concentration and Self- Confidence Improvement - Summer Camps -  2011 - Kids above 2nd Standard and Adults.

1) 30 Days Handwriting + Memory + Concentration
and Self Confidence Improvement Course                              -    Rs.1,950/-

Concentration: Generally, students find difficulty to concentrate on their studies or to do any
task for a longer duration with same amount of interest and zeal from the beginning till
the end. There are various reasons for their inability to concentrate. There are
people who completely lack concentration and there are people who has some
percentage of difficulties. Hence, individually assessing their problem and
giving remedial measures for better CONCENTRATION.

Memory: A strong and better memory is very important to any individual. Especially,
school and college students must possess better memory so as to answer the questions in
their Examinations very well and to recollect what they studied. Even middle and old
aged persons find difficulty to remember or recollect things which happened in recent
past. There are instances where a student is very good in answering questions orally
and finds very difficult to write the same in the similar way when it comes to Tests
and Examinations. There are various reasons for this too. This course would
enable them to possess a curious mindset to give importance to details.

Self-Confidence: Any job or work requires a person to do it confidently and to the
best of his ability. Presence of Self-Confidence and absence of fears play an important
role in achieving what one wants. Especially, School and college students even if they
possess very good qualities of a student or being very studious help them, presence
of lack of confidence will play spoilsport. It is very important that they possess the
quality of self-confidence which will enable them to show the strength of character
and certainly it will help them in their Examinations. For example, even if a
person possess good concentration level and a better memory, if he lacks
self-confidence, his performance in tests and Exams will differ due to absence of
confidence.

LOVE MARRIAGES - SPEECH 2 - TOAST MASTERS - BANGALORE

Maine Pyar Kiya” – I Hope most of you have seen this movie of Salman Khan.
A Beautiful Love Story of a Rich Boy and a Middle Class Girl showing emotions of Love and Sacrifice.
“When the Love is Genuine, Parents may Accept it.”
Good Evening Madam Toast Master, Fellow Toast Masters and Distinguished Guests.
Falling in Love with someone is a Wonderful experience.  Isn’t Nice to have Smart, Attractive and Wealthy person as our Spouse?  Added to it, if they are Caring, Sharing and Understanding, it will be Superb.
“My friend of many years – Satyanarayana happened to be a Lucky person.  He met Geetha at a Typing Institute; both of them fell in love with each other. After 2 years of courtship, they got married.
We friends helped them get married and settle down.  They are leading a Happy and Harmonious Life with their children. I think “Marriages are really made in Heaven”.
It was a Rainy Day in August 2005. I was in the High Court. An unknown Couple approached me. They wanted information to get “Divorce” on Mutual Consent.  I looked at them and found that they were made for Each Other.  I wondered why they wanted Divorce!
I was reluctant to speak to them.  Generally, people would come to court premises or approach an advocate for Free Information. (Smile) They  mentioned that they were in difficulty and needed my help.
Their story went thus:
Both of them were Software Engineers; Colleagues; working in an IT Company.  They were in Love for about 1 year and decided to get married with their Parent’s consent.
The girl’s parents objected. The boy had no Father and his mother was dependent on him.   Despite the opposition, they got married.
Their Employer insisted one of them to quit the job, due to their policy.  The wife quit her job.  She joined another company.  Unfortunately, both had different shifts. This continued for more than six months.
The husband and his mother wanted the wife to quit the job. However, she refused. Because of this, the husband became furious.
In the meanwhile, the wife’s mother fell seriously ill. She wanted to visit them.  However, the Husband forbid her from going, due to the Insult and Humiliation meted before their marriage. This created a deeper rift in their relationship.
Likewise, one or the other ego problems would crop up in their life. The tipping point came, when the lady aborted her pregnancy as Revenge, without even informing her husband.  When the husband came to know about this, he threw her out of his house.
She went to her parent’s home but they did not allow her to stay there.  She stayed at PG Hostel and started working from there.  They lived separately for 7 months, without any communication between them.
Under these circumstances the couple decided to Divorce each other.
I was saddened by their Troubles and sincerely felt like helping them out.
Instead of suggesting Divorce, I explained them where they went wrong and how they could have handled the situations. Further I counseled them about the consequences of Divorce on their Life.
I asked them to forget the past and live together, without imposing any conditions on each other. They liked the idea and assured me that they will give their marriage one last chance.
After about one year, they called me and thanked for my timely help.  They said that they were very happy and that they were expecting a Child.
Dear Toastmasters, We get to see Successful Love Marriages as well as broken Love Marriages.
If the Couples can give up their false egos and take decisions based on Mutual Respect and Understanding, the family courts wouldn’t have, as many Divorce Petitions as we see today.
Marriage is Sacrosanct and is built on Compromise and Sacrifice. After all Love Marriage is about the loved one & not about “I, ME or MYSEF”!
I conclude by quoting Dave Meurer:   A Great Marriage is not when the perfect couple' comes together. It is when an Imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.
